River of Treasures

The Swedish army invaded Poland in the 17th century in the war known as the Swedish Deluge, looting priceless sculptures and decorations from the royal palace in Warsaw and beyond.

In River of Treasures, filmmakers and explorers tell this story of cultural invasion and an ambitious expedition in search of lost treasures. It begins with the discovery of 350-year-old half-burnt letters written by the King of Poland mentioning a ship carrying priceless marbles, which lies somewhere deep under the water – where, exactly, no one knows.

The film takes the audience on a ten-year(!) journey to locate these sunken treasures, from library archives and historic castles to the bottom of the Vistula River. It is a story of sheer power, greed, struggle and reconciliation – but also of the beauty of science and the power of knowledge.

Against the Sands of Time

Polish archaeologists and conservators are involved in a wide range of activities around the world aimed at preserving the world’s heritage and cultural diversity. They can be found in the far reaches of Sudan and the pharaonic capitals of ancient Egypt, working in war-torn Syria, the caves of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and the mountain lakes of the Peruvian Andes, as well as in Poland’s most famous UNESCO sites such as Cracow and Wieliczka.

The Scientific Magnificent Seven

In the 19th century Polish explorers ventured to other continents far from their home in Europe. They took part in exploring these places but did not get involved in colonial exploitation and domination. Their motivation was to understand the culture of native peoples and the pulse of these distant lands.

They found themselves in the right place at the right time – Pacific indigenous cultures and societies, were still in pristine condition, but on the verge of the most tremendous change in their history. To witness such a transformation was a great privilege and challenge.

Such an opportunity attracted an exceptional breed of people – brave, romantic, heroic, and deeply committed to understanding these unfamiliar cultures.

This is the story of just a few of them – seven Polish explorers of the Pacific.
