Sudan – Land of the Black Pharaohs

At the time of its neighbor to the north’s power, Sudan was merely a poor daughter of Egypt. Generally conquered by the Pharaohs, it rarely struck out for independence. For nearly a century, however, it happened to conquer Egypt itself as well, installing a dynasty of black Sudanese kings on the Pharaonic throne in Thebes. Christians and Arabs fought over Sudan. The English and the Turks fought. Mahdi and Churchill. The traces of a rich history can still be seen today on the face of a country that until recently was the largest country in Africa.
